This blog is perfect for Civil Engineers that want to know more about how they can get involved in the upcoming Commonwealth Games projects. We’ve looked at the budget, the plans, and the engineers needed to make it all happen.
The Commonwealth Games returns to England in 2022, for just the third time, following London in 1934 and Manchester in 2022. The multi-sport event will be hosted in Birmingham between July and August, most of which are expected to take place in existing venues.
Despite the wealth of existing sport venues in Birmingham, there is still a great deal of work required to prepare the city across both infrastructure and operational delivery. With an overall budget of £778 million, the two most notable civil engineering projects planned in preparation of the Commonwealth Games are the upgrade to Alexander Stadium and the creation of the athletes’ village.

The Alexander Stadium will hold both the athletic events and the opening and closing ceremonies of The Commonwealth Games.
To facilitate the crowds, the stadium will undergo an expansion which will take it from a capacity of 12,700 to over 40,000. The estimated cost of the project is £70 million and British engineering and design firm Arup were chosen to redesign the stadium, with construction-giant, Mace, managing the renovation project.
The Athletes’ village is the largest infrastructure project for the Commonwealth Games, accommodating over 6,500 athletes and officials and costing over £55 million. Post-games, the development will provide over 1,400 homes for the people of Birmingham, as part of a longer-term regeneration plan to deliver 5,000 new homes.
To transform Alexander Stadium into the hub of UK athletics, and to develop a state-of-the-art athletes’ village for the games, engineers will be required from design phase right through to completion.
