If you’re a recruiter, or somebody considering a career in recruitment, this blog is for you. It’s a first-hand account of life as a recruiter, and an inside look at the opportunities available at ATA Recruitment with the right hard work.
We’re celebrating another employee milestone! Owen Hughes began his recruitment career with ATA as a Trainee in September 2014 and has received his 5-year service award this week. 5 years and 3 promotions later, we’ve caught up with Owen to discuss the journey from starting his first recruitment job to managing his own team.
What were you doing before you joined ATA Recruitment?
I was working as a Trainee Property Consultant, specialising in commercial lettings. It was junior job with a very low salary, and I knew it wasn’t necessarily what I wanted to do long-term. I developed a number of skills in this role that were relevant to recruitment, but at the time I hadn’t even considered recruitment as a career choice.
What attracted you to a career in recruitment?
I’ll be completely honest and admit that I knew very little about recruitment at the time of applying. The starting salary was attractive and significantly more than I was earning at the time, and I knew that I needed a new challenge. It was clear that full training was provided and the competencies they looked for in a trainee sounded a lot like me, such as great communication skills and ambition. I applied and didn’t really expect much in terms of a response, and here I am 5 years later!
How have you progressed since?
I was promoted from Trainee to Recruitment Consultant after a year with the business which was great. I then received my second promotion to Recruitment Specialist within my first 3 years. Most recently, I was promoted to Managing Consultant in July 2018 which has been my biggest step up in terms of responsibility. As Managing Consultant, I lead a team of 6 contract recruiters, and I am responsible for the growth and delivery of our contract infrastructure business. So, in 5 years, I’ve gone from a Trainee Recruiter to managing my own team with a wealth of responsibility!
What do you put your success down to?
I’m a great listener – I learn from advice I’m given and apply it to my work. The guidance I’ve received from the senior management team at ATA has been so valuable and a real factor in my success with the business. If you take the training and advice on board, and are willing to put in the hard work, you will be successful. It’s never about how long you have been here or who you know at ATA, it’s genuinely your ability and results that earn you a promotion.
What’s next for you?
The best part about working at ATA is the development opportunities. I’ve always got my eye on the next promotion as I’m ambitious and set my sights high! I eventually want to head up a larger team and be given more responsibility within the business so I am now focused on developing and supporting each team member to achieve their personal goals as well as the ultimate team goals.
What would your advice be for those considering a recruitment career?
Alongside hard work, patience and perseverance are also key – there will be some setbacks along the way, and you need to be able to move on from that and try again. Don’t become complacent when you start booking business, as nothing is ever guaranteed in recruitment.
Take the training on board, listen to the advice of management and senior colleagues and it will pay off, and it’s worth it when it does! The rewards in recruitment are next-to-none and with the right hard work, you can have a long and successful career, earning great money.
We believe in progression and development and our completely homegrown management team is evidence of this – even our Operations Director started as a Trainee Recruitment Consultant!
